How Much Weed Can You Buy in Colorado?

When purchasing marijuana in Colorado, it’s important to know just how much you can buy, and that is determined by the intended use – recreational or medical. Both uses have certain regulations and limits, however medical use allows for a higher purchase limit (if you have an MMJ card).

How Much Recreational Weed Can You Buy in Colorado?

If you want to purchase weed to use recreationally, your limits will differ from those purchasing weed for medical purposes. Colorado law states that recreational users over the age of 21 can purchase up to 28 grams of marijuana in a single transaction. In addition, Rec users are also limited to possessing no more than 1 ounce of flower, or 8 grams of concentrate, or 800 mg of edibles, at any given time. If you plan to purchase these products, a licensed store like Life Flower Dispensary can help you determine your legally acceptable limit. Or, if you want to grow some of your own, Colorado permits up to six plants per resident over the age of 21, with no more than three mature plants.

How Much Medical Weed Can You Buy in Colorado?

If you have a medical marijuana license or an MMJ card, you are allowed to possess 2 ounces of flower. However recently, the state has made an adjustment to the amount of concentrate marijuana products that someone with an MMJ card can purchase. The limit was previously at 40 grams in a single transaction and has since been reduced to 8 grams. The limit is even less for MMJ patients ages 18-20, where they will be capped at 2 grams per purchase, although Life Flower Dispensary serves patients ages 21+ only.

What Is an Extended Plant Count?

If anyone needs a license that allows them to grow more than 6 plants or buy more than the legal limit of marijuana in one day, they can complete paperwork for an Extended Plant Count (EPC). An EPC allows a patient or their primary caregiver to grow more than six plants if it is deemed medically necessary to address the patient’s medical condition.

Even with an EPC, patients and caregivers are limited to the number of plants they can cultivate on a residential property. The cap is set at 12 plants on a residential property, however, if you register with the MED (Marijuana Enforcement Division) and local laws allow, you may grow up to 24 plants.

An Extended plant count or Extended Concentrate Count (ECC) also allows patients to purchase over the flower and concentrate limits deemed acceptable by the state. In order to register as EPC or ECC with a dispensary, a patient is first evaluated by a licensed medical marijuana doctor to establish their needs.

What do I need to do in order to switch my EPC/ECC over to Life Flower Dispensary?

EPC and ECC patients must establish a dispensary as their primary care facility in order to make a purchase. We are not able to register patients if another Medical Marijuana Center was listed as your Primary Center in the previous 30 days. Once it has been 30 days since registered with another MMC, we can switch registration to Life Flower Dispensary with the following steps:

1. Bring in your Physician Certificate issued by Colorado Department of Health

2. Notify the previous dispensary of your new registration in writing.
*If you are a member at another dispensary, you will need to contact your current Dispensary by email to ask for removal as a member.

3. Fill out Patient Affidavit at Life Flower Dispensary

4. Fill out Patient Agreement form at Life Flower Dispensary

5. Uniform Certification Form
a. The uniform certification is necessary for any ECC purchases in 2022. However, we do not need this form for EPC purchases in 2022.

6. Name, State, Date of birth, Med Card number, Med expiration date, plant count, gram limit

What to bring with you to Life Flower:

• Written/Printed notification to end membership at previous dispensary
• Copy of Physician’s Certificate as issued by CDPHE
• Valid ID
• Patient Registry Card
